Menwhile Cardinal Newman's womens team were the British Colleges NW champions and go on to the national finals.

After a closely fought season with 3 teams finishing on equal points, Winstanley gained the top spot due to a greater goal difference than runners up Sir John Deanes and Holy Cross.

The title is all the more rewarding as Winstanley fielded 2 males and 9 females against other teams with the full complement of 6 males and 5 females.

Coach and manager Anne Baxby said: “Winstanley has had one of its strongest years in hockey. Most of the squad are AS students so we are now aiming even higher and would love to get to the British College finals next season. I am excited to see who arrives in the new lower 6th to complement existing squad members.”

The women’s team narrowly missed out on qualifying for the national finals by finishing as runners up to Cardinal Newman College in the British College North West Championship.

Alice Williamson, Libby Aitcheson and Vicky Rumsey made the British College National Squad this year and Mikey Speight is following the Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) programme
