Health Shadow Secretary visits Winstanley

 Shadow Secretary of State for Health, Andy Burnham, paid a visit to Winstanley College on17th September, as part of the College’s Medics, Dentists and Vets (MDV) day.

Andy, who is MP for Leigh, gave a keynote speech on his vision for the future of health and social care to prospective Medic, Dentist and Vet students.

Before giving his speech Andy commented: ‘’I hope to get across the importance of the NHS and how lucky these future medics are to have the chance to work for the best healthcare service in the world. As a local MP I am very proud of what the College does to support these students in raising aspirations and helping them to achieve their career ambitions.”

17 year old A-level student Labake Abioye, from Worsley, hopes to become a pharmacist. Commenting on Andy’s speech she said: “It gave us insight into the future of the NHS. I think it will help us to understand how laws and ethics have an effect on the structure of our healthcare system.”

The day also included practical workshops in First Aid and advice and guidance from former Winstanley students who are now studying for degrees within the professions.

Will Poole, 17 from St Helens, hopes to go on to study medicine. He commented: “I think the college’s MDV programme is essential in preparing students for their future career. It ensures that we are constantly kept up-to-date with the latest industry developments and get the work experience vital to gaining a place on such competitive degree courses.”

Biology teacher, Dave Woods, who coordinates the MDV programme, summed up the day saying: “I think the fantastic turnout and attitude of our students today instils confidence that our future health is in safe hands!”
