King Edward’s student, Amara, recently won a £1000 Baylies Foundation essay writing competition and plans to use the prize money to visit Zambia to volunteer for the charity Umunandi. Amara is the young ambassador for the charity run and founded by Mark and Ruth Chitty. Umunandi is a registered charity based in Stourbridge, but has friends up and down the country working together towards a simple goal: accessible education and basic care for orphans and vulnerable children in Lusaka, Zambia.

The charity supports children, often from child-headed families, to become pupils at Greenpark School through sponsorship and fundraising schemes, and runs schemes that provide the school with vital schoolroom resources, food for malnourished pupils and support for teachers. The philosophy of the charity is that every child should have the opportunity to learn, be safe, and reach their potential.

Amara hopes to travel there in the summer of 2017 to volunteer now that she has the means to do so. Amara says, “I never thought I could raise enough money to go out there and it’s been a wish ever since I began work for the charity, but the opportunity to do it for real and hopefully make some small difference is thrilling”.
